Out and About

From our lodge at Sewardstone you can walk to the nearest pub (The George Inn) and the village shop in Blackawton (1.5 miles). The shop sells everything, but you’re only 7 miles from Totnes which bustles with independents and has a thriving market on Fridays and Saturdays. The Bull Inn serves delicious organic food. Dartmouth is 9 miles, Kingsbridge is 7 miles and Salcombe 10 miles. There are excellent walks in the surrounding area, with Dartmoor a few miles up the road and many places to join the south-west coast path .

Nearby beaches

Blackpool Sands

Blackpool Sands is one of the best beaches in the region. Renowned for its crystal-clear waters and stunning backdrop of lush pine trees, this Blue Flag-awarded beach offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Mill Bay

Mill Bay is a privately owned and sheltered, sandy beach. At low tide, there are plenty of rock pools for your dog to sniff and explore. You can access the beaches from East Portlemouth car park or by getting the ferry from Salcombe.

Bantham

Bantham beach is one of Devon’s premier beaches and is situated at the mouth of the Avon estuary, a designated AONB. It offers beautiful scenery with panoramic views over Bigbury Bay and Burgh Island. As the tide recedes, it reveals a variety of fascinating rock pools.

Beautiful Towns & Villages

TOTNES

The fascinating, quirky town is twinned with Narnia! It has wonderful shops selling artisan crafts and local fare, and has an amazing market on Fridays and Saturdays. There are a number of delightful restaurants and cafes, and a Norman castle offering fantastic views of the town.

SALCOMBE

Salcombe is another great seaside town to visit with many different sandy beaches and has many fantastic shops and art galleries. Overbecks house has incredible gardens and views and there are lots of great places to eat overlooking the sea.

DARTMOUTH

A fabulous seaside town with everything you would expect to find. Sit and watch the boats or treat yourself to a fabulous lunch or dinner at The Seahorse. For a casual lunch Rockfish, which is also owned by Mitch Tonks serves the best fish and chips in the area.

Wonderful walks

The coastal path surrounds us and is within easy reach with many breathtaking vistas and short and long walks to suit everyone. There are beautiful short walks from Gallants Bower to Dartmouth Castle, the walk down to Start Point Lighthouse (above) has an easy terrain with spectacular far reaching views across to Dorset and for a steeper incline, Kingswear to Coleton. For the more energetic, the walk from Bantham along the coast path taking in the amazing vista of Burgh Island with its iconic white hotel, to Great Milton’s beaches with the award winning Beach Shack café are highly recommended.

We are blessed to have award winning pubs and restaurants nearby, we will provide a full list of all them all when you book. The Seahorse in Dartmouth run by celebrated chef Mitch Tonks is an unmissable experience.

The famous Cott Inn, an ancient award winning pub in Dartington has just won yet another major award for it’s beautiful pub garden!

Country Houses

There are a number of National Trust properties near us worth visiting. The beautiful Coleton Fishacre (above) has truly magnificent gardens leading down to the sea.

Overbecks at Salcombe is also worth a visit and of course Greenway, Agatha Christie’s Devon home gives a fascinating insight into the author’s life.
